Her Excellency Dr. Maitha Al-Shamsi holds a PhD in Sociology and is a researcher in various social fields that focus on women, population, and employment in the GCC countries. She is an expert in the sectors of immigration and development, and has authored several published studies and books including Mother of the Nation: Fatima bint Mubarak…Principles and Accomplishments, and Expatriate Migration to the Gulf Cooperation Council States: Current Problems and Future Prospects.
H.E. Dr. Al-Shamsi has made significant contributions serving on a number of international, regional, and local boards and committees, as member of: the Board of Trustees of the Abu Dhabi University; the L’Oréal Awards; the Advisory Council for the Arab Knowledge Report; the Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi; member of the Scientific Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the Arab States on Education and Scientific Research; and member of a committee to pursue the recommendations of the Ministers of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the Arab world.
H.E. Dr. Al-Shamsi received the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Arab Management in 2003 in the category of Distinguished Female Arab Manager, and was listed in the International Biographical Center’s 2,000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century in 2002. She also received the Order of the Palm (Academic), with a certificate from the French Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in appreciation of her efforts in the establishment of the Paris-Sorbonne University in Abu Dhabi in 2008. She was also listed on the Forbes 200 Most Powerful Arab Women list in 2014.
