Lecture: 20-12-2017
H.E. Ambassador Abdullah Saif Al-Nuaimi
UAE Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
in Seoul, Republic of Korea

This lecture entitled “The Future of Trade between the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Korea” begins with a short introduction of the Korean Peninsula and the events that caused its division into two countries: the southern part – the Republic of Korea (ROK) – is a pluralist democracy that adopts a capitalist system based on a free-market economy; and the northern part – the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) – is a totalitarian political system inherited from father to son that adopts a communist economic system. The lecture then turns to the key aspects of the ROK’s economic development and technological advances over the past decades.

The future of trade and investment between the UAE and the ROK is discussed, tracing their bilateral relations since they were first established in the early 1970s. These ties developed into a strategic partnership in 2009. Statistics on trade and investment as well as the most important mutual projects between the countries are also presented.

The lecture examines the most important fields in which the UAE and the ROK can increase and expand trade and investment, alongside the UAE’s objectives to attract more foreign direct investment (FDI) from the ROK. The lecture ends with a description of the UAE Embassy’s plan to attract FDI for the year 2018 and beyond.
